On May 3rd Local 181 with help from its Public Relations committee hosted the 2013 Retirement and Awards Banquet.

Retirees

This year we honoured 12 retirees on their great careers:

  • Klint Flavel (35 years)
  • Kirk Adam (34 years)
  • Ron Forrester (33 year)
  • Vern Ell (32 years)
  • Dave Gejdos (32.5 years)
  • Reg Salloum (31 years)
  • Len Zinkewich (31 years)
  • Wayne Holzer (30 years)
  • Brian Novak (28 years)
  • Ken Gaddie (29 years)

Along with the retirees we also honoued a few others.

Awards of Distinction

Firefighter Mark Moroz was honoured with the Award of Distinction. Mark received this award for his tireless efforts to raise funds for Movember. With his leadership Local 181 members were able to raise over $25000 last November for prostate cancer and men’s mental health.



Len Sitter Memorial Scholarship

Miranda Seifert daughter of firefighter Myles Seifert was the recipient of the Len Sitter Memorial Scholarship. Miranda will be using this money to attend Queens University in Kingston Ontario. While at Queens she will be studying Geography and Environmental Studies along with playing CIS varsity Rugby for the Queens Gaels.



Award of Merit

The Honourable Ralph Goodale was given the Award of Merit for his passionate work on bill 388. Bill 388 proposes three firefighters issues; a one-time $300,000 benefit for firefighters (and for other “public safety officers”) who perish or become disabled, it calls for firefighter safety to become an objective of the National Building Code and it puts firefighters in priority group one for vaccines and other medications during health emergencies.
